We are running our 2008 mountaineering course in the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh. Our training ground will be a little ahead of the beautiful Baralacha La pass. The base camp will be a few kilometers off the Manali-Leh road in a valley near Bharatpur City. During the 16-day program, you will learn the basics of ice and snow craft and how to use mountaineering equipment. At the end of the program, we will go up the peak Yonam or one of the nearby peaks for height gain of upto 6000m.
Course length: 16 days
Season: April - early June and September - early November
Accommodation
Manali: Hotels on twin sharing basis
On the trail: Tents on twin sharing basis
Individual gear
All participants will have to carry personal gear (usually
15 - 20 kg)
Porters will carry all other gear
Curriculum
- Use of ice axe
- Self-arrest techniques
- Techniques in ascending / descending snow slopes, types and use of snow anchors
- Roped climbing and belay systems
- Introduction of crampons, French cramponing and ice climbing
- Different types of ice anchors, protections and belay systems
- Glacier travel, crevasse rescue and evacuation
- Fixed rope routines
- Establishing high camps
- LNT (Leave no traces) practices
The Program
Day 1: Arrive in Manali
Day 2: Pre-departure preparations
Day 3: Drive to Jispa and camp for the night
Day 4: Drive to Bharatpur and camp for the night
Day 5: Approach walk and base camp establishment
Day 6-14: Program curriculum including snow craft and ice craft, cramponing, snow and ice anchors and belays, glacier travel, self arrest, crevasse rescue, ice climbing, establishment of high camps and height gain
Day 15: Return to Manali by evening.
